Segunda División de Fútbol Salvadoreño

The ''Segunda División de Fútbol Salvadoreño'' (Second Division) is the second level of the El Salvador League System of football. Teams have a chance to gain promotion to the Primera División de Fútbol Profesional. The champions of the Apertura and Clausura play the direct promotion playoff every year. The winner of that series ascends to the first division directly. The losing side gets another chance to get promoted by again playing a promotional playoff. This time against the second worst team of the first division. The bottom team get relegated.
==History==
The Salvadoran Federation of Soccer decided to improve the quality and competitiveness of Soccer.
Segunda División de Fútbol Salvadoreño was created in 1950, with two groups and the winner was promoted to Primera División de Fútbol Profesional.
Category of Ascent was made of 12 teams, four teams in each zone: central, western and eastern.
The first 12 teams in Second Division were ANTEL, Atlético Marte, Marte Soyapango, Caterpillar de San Salvador, Picapiedra del Plan de la Laguna, Antiguo Cuscatlán, Dragón, Once Municipal, Molino F. C, Ahuachapán and Puertas de Santa Ana y San Rafael.
The first President of the Segunda División de Fútbol Salvadoreño was Dr Mauro Alfredo Bernal Silva.
The addition of teams worsened the level of competition remarkably having up to twelve teams per zone (36 teams altogether).
In 1986 the Legislative Assembly emitted a decree in the Reforms to the Law of Soccer and the Category of Ascent in which it stated that only 24 teams would be allowed in the Segunda División split into two groups.
